THE 4,045-TEU Laura Maersk suffered an explosion in its engine room that injured one crewman and disabled the ship late on June 4 south east of New York, reports Kiev's Maritime Bulletin, which specialises in marine casualties,
It was so far out to sea that a US Coast Guard helicopter couldn't make it both ways to medevac an injured crewman, so helicopter landed on Navy destroyer USS Mahan, and took off from destroyer after approaching damaged containership.
The injured man was transferred to hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. At last report, the Laura Maersk remained disabled and adrift, no tug in sight, but it was expected the crew would restart engine. She was to arrive at Newark on June 5 from Algeciras.
