THE 8,063-TEU OOCL Rotterdam set a record in Melbourne having exchanged the highest number of containers in a single call - 6,516 boxes, or 11,037 TEU, reports the Manila Bulletin.

The vessel called at Australia's first fully automated terminal, Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT), a unit of Manila-based International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI), The completed the exchange took 90 hours at a rate of 72.4 berth moves per hour.
"VICT is honoured to achieve another record at the Port of Melbourne in what has been a challenging year especially for Victoria dealing with the pandemic," said VICT chief executive Tim Vancampen.
The exchange highlights the need for larger vessels and increasing handling capacity. At the same time, it poses new challenges for landside logistics that need to deal with increasing peak volumes, said the report.
In order to address those concerns, VICT said it offers a 24/7 coverage for receipt and delivery. "We would like to congratulate OOCL on the milestone container exchange and thank them for having selected VICT as their terminal operator," Mr Vancampen said.
Said OOCL Australia managing director Eddy Declercq: "We appreciate VICT's efficiency at a time when every move counts."
