THE 2020 Covid crisis caused 15 European gateways to only have a throughput of 76.8 million TEU, a 2.8 per cent drop compared to 2019, reports Strasbourg's International Transport Journal.
The Dutch Port of Rotterdam remained Europe's front runner, handling 14.35 million TEU, down 3.2 per cent. Antwerp was the only large European gateway to grow, with a 1.4 per cent increase to 12 million TEU.
The Port of Hamburg dropped 7.9 per cent, with a total throughput of 8.5 million TEU. The Port of Valencia reduced its fall of 9.1 per cent in Q1 to only 0.5 per cent the previous full year. The port handled 5.4 million TEU.
The Greek Port of Piraeus lost 3.6 per cent with 5.44 million TEU containers handled due to declining import traffic.
The 5.1 million boxes that passed through the Spanish Port of Algeciras represented a 0.4 per cent fall. The Port of Barcelona handled 2.96 million TEU.
