TAIWANESE shipowner Wan Hai Lines has placed an order at South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for five 13,200 TEU containerships at a cost of $550 million.
HHI will start delivering the new box ships in the first quarter of 2023, which will become the largest vessels of Wan Hai's fleet in terms of carrying capacity, reports Seatrade Maritime News, Colchester, UK.
Wan Hai said the new shipbuilding contract was part of its fleet renewal plan aimed at maintaining competitiveness and to support continuous market development.
Earlier in March, Wan Hai Lines announced plans to acquire nine vessels with a capacity of about 13,000 TEU.
Wan Hai Lines currently operates a fleet of 74 self-owned vessels and 57 chartered vessels.
