Long Beach will need 24-hour shifts for future cargo flow

THE LA-Long Beach port complex is expected to see a 10 per cent growth in container volumes this year as cargo surges from Asia, causing the Long Beach port authority to say it will need 24-hour shifts to handle future cargo flow, reports IHS Media.

The ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles are forecasted to handle over 19 million TEU in 2021. Last year, the combined ports saw volumes of 17.32 million TEU.
The Port of Long Beach has seen volume records broken over the last 11 months, handling 8.11 million TEU in 2020, a 6.3 per cent increase over 2019.
"We forecast that in 2021, we will have another record-breaking year for the Port of Long Beach. Even as spending on services has increased, we foresee that shippers will need to move high volumes to accommodate imports," said Port of Long Beach executive director Mario Cordero.
The records are accompanied by increasing container dwell and limited chassis and railcar supply, both appear to be worsening in the second half of 2021.
"We have entered a new normal. I don't see (container volumes) diminishing in the years to come. In fact, it's only going to increase. We need to seriously consider a 24-7 model as a vision," said Mr Cordero.
