INDIA is becoming an increasingly productive market for regional container carriers targeting intra-Asia trades as strong demand levels help sell capacity, reports IHS Media.
Wan Hai Lines is consolidating its Indian network, announcing a new string between South China, Vietnam, and East India at the end of March.
Named the CI7, the weekly loop will deploy four 1,200-TEU ships, with stops at Haiphong, Zhanjiang, Nansha, Cat Lai, Port Klang (North Port), Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Port Klang (North Port), and Haiphong.
"The CI7 service, which connects South China-Vietnam-East India directly, will provide clients with better transit times and more service options," said Wan Hai Lines.
"It will also strengthen Wan Hai Lines' current services to better serve customers' needs."
Wan Hai now has nine weekly services under its Asia-Middle East-India subcontinent network.
The lack of sufficient gateway cargo had been a major sales deterrent to carrier managers evaluating East India long-haul calls.
India's southeast zone saw 434,685 TEU in February, compared with 457,904 TEU in January and 471,421 TEU in February 2021.
