THE Prime Minister of Cambodia Hun Sen recently was guest of honour for the groundbreaking of a major new container terminal expansion at the kingdom's main Sihanoukville Autonomous Port.
The port is developing a three-phase expansion through to 2029 to allow larger ships to call at the country, one of the region's fastest growing economies.
"The expansion project will allow large container ships to dock at the port and significantly reduce ocean freight costs for Cambodia," the prime minister said. "It will help attract investors and accelerate our economic development."
The first phase includes the construction of a 350-metre-long and 14.5-metre-deep container terminal, allowing ships of up to 4,000 TEU to call.
Once all three phases are completed, the port, whose current annual throughput stands at 700,000 TEU, will be able to process 2.58 million TEU annually, according to Singapore's Splash 247.
