JIANGNAN Shipyard, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), successfully delivered the 24,116-TEU MSC Mette, to MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and ICBC Financial Leasing Co, reports Rotterdam's Offshore Energy.

Designed by Chinese shipbuilder Hudong-Zhonghua, the vessel boasts impressive dimensions, measuring 399.99 metres in total length, 61.5 metres in molded width, and 33.2 metres in molded depth.



With a capacity to carry 24,116 TEU, it ranks among the world's largest containerships.



The ship features various innovative elements to enhance its operational efficiency and minimise environmental impact.



Notable features include a small bulbous bow, large diameter propellers, and energy-saving ducts.



Additionally, the containership incorporates an air lubrication system that creates a layer of bubbles between the hull and water, significantly reducing friction and hydrodynamic resistance.



This technology is expected to provide energy savings of around three to four per cent, resulting in a substantial decrease in CO2 emissions.



The MSC Mette is equipped with a shaft generator system, a first for such a vessel. This system is designed to reduce fuel consumption, optimise the ship's Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), and subsequently lower greenhouse gas emissions.



This vessel is part of a series, with four ships in total, and the final one is set to be delivered in late September this year.



In addition to the MSC Mette, MSC welcomed another massive vessel, the 24,000-TEU MSC Mariella and delivered by Yangzi Xinfu Shipyard, a subsidiary of Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group, the previous month.
