LLOYD'S Register (LR) has granted approval in principle to the 2,500 TEU feeder design with methanol propulsion developed by Taiwanese shipbuilder CSBC, reports Athens' Safety4Sea.

This achievement is milestone in the Taiwanese shipbuilding sector, representing one of the initial approvals for an alternative-fuelled vessel constructed in Taiwan.

LR and CSBC had previously collaborated successfully on obtaining approval for a 50,000 dwt methanol-fuelled oil tanker.

The approval process involved a comprehensive certification procedure, encompassing a thorough risk assessment for methanol application.

LR anticipates its continued role as a reliable advisor in various upcoming design projects for CSBC, said engineering manager Zhang Xiaodong.

In the course of this joint project, CSBC has worked closely with LR to enhance its design expertise and confidence.

The collaboration involved refining the approved design and jointly preparing for future challenges in the maritime industry.
