SOUTH Korea's HMM has taken delivery of the 'HMM Green,' a 9,000 TEU methanol-powered containership.

The vessel is the first of nine sister ships ordered in February 2023 from HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (seven vessels) and HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (two vessels).



HMM will progressively receive the remaining eight vessels by next year as part of its ongoing fleet expansion, reports London's Logistics Manager.



The 'HMM Green' is designed to bunker bio-methanol at the Port of Shanghai.



Bio-methanol, a renewable fuel derived from waste resources, can significantly reduce carbon emissions by up to 65 per cent, eliminate sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions, and cut nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 80 per cent compared to conventional bunker fuel.



All vessels in this new series are equipped with advanced environmental technologies to meet international regulations, including EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime requirements. This ensures they can operate across all trade routes without restriction, reinforcing HMM's readiness for upcoming emissions reduction mandates.



An HMM official stated: "This new vessel delivery is expected to accelerate HMM's goal of achieving 'Net-Zero by 2045.' To enhance our competitiveness, we will continue to explore and adopt various fuel options."



The 'HMM Green' will be deployed on HMM's independently operated FIM (Far East Asia, India, and the Mediterranean Sea) service.
