Artificial intelligence is moving deeper into day-to-day maritime operations, with several significant deployments announced during August rather than another wave of small technology demonstrations. On August 26, Eastern Pacific Shipping said it would expand Orca AI's computer-vision navigation platform to dozens of additional vessels after a five-ship pilot covering more than 130,000 nautical miles recorded a 48% reduction in close-encounter events per 1,000 nautical miles. A day earlier, ClassNK launched a source-linked AI assistant for ship survey requirements. Japan Marine United is preparing to install supervised autonomous navigation aboard the working limestone carrier Kimitetsu Maru in December, while Evergreen, Samsung Heavy Industries, Weathernews and ClassNK have established a real-vessel trial to determine whether AI voyage optimization produces independently measurable fuel and emissions savings. Other recent projects are putting AI into tanker safety monitoring, 24-hour fleet risk centers, shipyards, drilling fleets and large container terminals. The common thread across the latest activity is scale: shipping companies are increasingly moving from evaluating algorithms to connecting them with vessels, crews, operating centers and physical infrastructure.
