KOREA's HMM and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop smart ship technology, reports Colchester's Seatrade Maritime News.

Together the two will work together in the research, development, and innovation in smart ship solutions.
The MOU essentially covers the construction of eco-friendly technologies suitable for smart ships and the enhancement of technical competence related to the digitalisation of ships.
"Both digitalisation and decarbonisation have become integral factors on the pathway to sustainable growth. HMM has concentrated on the exploration of new technologies for the future and has actively participated in various discussions with the parties concerned. We look forward to taking this partnership to the next level with great synergy," said an HMM official.
As part of the deal, HMM adopted SVESSEL, an advanced smart ship solution developed by SHI. SVESSEL has been implemented to five out of 12 24,000-TEU containerships transferred to HMM this year.
HMM is also planning to operate a smart ship control centre to observe the safety and efficiency of ships in real-time, which will look at the range of data such as cargo information, service routes, locations, weather, and vessel conditions.
