FRENCH shipping giant's CMA CGM's 9,200 TEU vessel Missouri grounded in the Suez Canal on last week following a blackout that caused the crew to lose control of the box ship.
The 300-metre vessel has a draught of 14.4 metres and left Port Said on 13 October and was due to arrive in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia 6 am on October 16.
According to reports the vessel at around 1:50 pm local time on October 14 suffered a blackout while heading south transiting the Suez Canal in convoy, jamming the vessel's rudder. The loss of control meant the vessel subsequently grounded on the canal bank, damaging the rudder further.
The grounding of CMA CGM Missouri caused the convoy, with the next vessel in line the Maersk Hanoi to come to a halt. No other ships were damaged in the incident.
CMA CGM Missouri was then towed to Great Bitter Lake, a kind of marine lay-by that ships transiting the Suez Canal use for manoeuvring, according to UK's Container News.
