China-Europe box transit via Kaliningrad increased 4.6-fold in 2020

MORE than 47,500 TEU were carried between China and Europe in 2020 using the Kaliningrad Railway, up 4.6-fold year-on-year, reports St Petersburg¡¯s SeaNews.

According to the Kaliningrad Railway, the smallest subsidiary of Russian Railways, more than 29,100 TEU of this traffic was multimodal delivery, with containers shipped from Baltiysk and Kaliningrad Commercial Sea Port on board feeder vessels.
Some 18.400 TEU was pure rail delivery with cargo crossing the border via the Mamonovo/Branevo checkpoint, said the report.
Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave on the Baltic Sea surrounded by Poland and Lithuania, was once part of Germany called East Prussia. It was taken by Russia and is prized as a year-long ice free port.
