South Africa's Transnet investigates coal train derailments

Author:   Posttime:2021-07-16

SOUTH AFRICA's state-owned railway Transnet is investigating whether recent derailments benefitted suppliers while fixing a central line used to export coal, reports Bloomberg.

A train of over 200 wagons derailed on its way to Richards Bay July 3, with repairs continuing on the line that's partially open.
"What is clear to us is that things have to change. There are serious risks in a recovery system based on emergency procurement, which may be open to abuse not only internally, but by suppliers who benefit from such incidents occurring," said Transnet.
"Not only must our partners be suitably qualified, they must be contractually accountable," said Transnet.
Many South African companies face financial struggles due to corruption and mismanagement, with Transnet being integral to economic fundamental changes.
