Dublin port trade changes in 2021 due to Brexit effect

Author:   Posttime:2022-01-28

THE make-up of trade through Dublin Port changed in 2021 as Brexit controls hit Irish trade with the UK, with more items moved directly between Ireland and the EU, reports Bloomberg News.

Overall volumes fell 5.2 per cent compared to 2020, while the fourth quarter saw volume drop 10.3 per cent.
There was a "substantial decline in unitised volumes with Great Britain - down 214,000 units," said Dublin Port CEO Eamonn O'Reilly.
Mr O'Reilly declared it was largely offset by a strong increase in volumes with the EU of 158,000 units.
Traditionally goods moving between Ireland and the continent travelled through the UK.
Since Brexit, the use of that so-called land bridge has reduced as more businesses seek to transfer goods directly.
