SAUDI Ports Authority (Mawani) announced that the country's ports moved 657,420 TEU in September, a year-on-year rise of 9.2 per cent over last year's figure of 602,033 TEU.
Exported containers surged to 266,654 TEU, a 12.48 per cent growth compared to a throughout of 218,524 TEU in September 2021, according to TradeArabia News Service..
Imported containers reached 203,000 TEU, 6.74 per cent more than the 188,228 TEU recorded during the same period last year. Transshipment containers recorded an 8.59 per cent increase to reach 271,690 TEU in comparison with the 250,200 TEU recorded in the same month last year.
Mawani pointed out that the growth achievement was an outcome of its initiatives aimed mainly at developing the maritime sector and increasing its operational efficiency as well as help boost the legislative and regulatory environment by restructuring procedures.
With the stability of shipping prices, the cargo throughput at the Saudi ports recorded an increase in September hitting 25,678,865 tonnes, 3.2 per cent above the 24,882,022 tonnes handled last year.
General cargo totalled 873,986 tonnes, a 64.83 per cent increase compared to the 530,227 tonnes recorded in September 2021. Dry bulk cargo increased by 23.02 per cent to reach 4,611,263 tonnes compared to the 3,748,393 tonnes recorded last year.
During September, 1,256 vessels called at Saudi ports, 20.08 per cent more than the 1,046 vessels in same month last year.
