Maersk to spend US$60 million to boost railways in Mobile, Alabama

MAERSK's port operator APM Terminals plans US$60 million investment to boost Mobile, Alabama's rail infrastructure, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.
APM Terminals plans to double the track capacity at the Port of Mobile's railyard, one of the many projects to expand the port's inland intermodal reach.
APMT will invest $60 million to increase the working track length at Mobile to 12,000 feet from its current 6,000 feet, which will allow faster rail loading and departures. The expansion is expected to take two years to complete.
While the port owns the railyard, APMT is its exclusive user because it is the only container terminal at the port.
Mobile has an 80-acre intermodal container transfer facility with 250,000 TEU of lift capacity, according to APM Mobile. Located just outside the container terminal, the Alabama Port Authority is building an overpass connecting the two sites to speed up the transfer of containers from the docks to rail; the bridge is also expected to be ready by 2025.
The completion of the APM track expansion project will coincide with the expected opening of the Montgomery inland port, a $54 million project run by the Alabama Port Authority and CSX Transportation.
The State of Alabama and Norfolk Southern are also working on a separate $231 million project that will upgrade 280 miles of tracks and allow NS to double-stack containers.
