MAERSK has signed another large retailer to its green shipping service even as emission reduction has been stymied by use of the Cape route to avoid Red Sea rocket attack, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.
Flying Tiger Copenhagen, a home and accessories retailer based in Denmark, will transport its entire ocean freight volume booked with Maersk in the carrier's biofuel-driven ECO Delivery product from this year onward, joining global shippers such as Nestle, Amazon and Volvo and Norwegian retailer Europris in committing ocean cargo to the low-emission solution.
"We want to offer affordable products which are good for the environment and ultimately end dependency on virgin fossil materials and fuels," said Flying Tiger Copenhagen CEO Martin Jermiin, who runs 900 stores in 27 countries.
The ECO Delivery product is similar to Hapag-Lloyd's ShipGreen and other services offered by some of the major carriers that use biofuel blended with conventional fossil fuels. The carriers claim emissions of these seaborne transports can be reduced by over 80 per cent on a lifecycle basis compared with using conventional bunkers.
