PANYNJ container volumes soften in April but still 2nd busiest US port

THE port of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) continued to see volumes fall from last year's records but gained on 2019 levels after two months of falling slightly below.

The east coast's largest gateway volumes fell 20.1 per cent year on year in April but were 7.1 per cent above pre-pandemic 2019 levels by handling a total of 648,930 TEU.

These figures position the seaport as the nation's second busiest for the first four months of the year.

PANYNJ reported that the import of fewer than 23,000 loaded TEU separated the nation's top three busiest ports in April as US retailers work to move out goods stored in domestic warehouses during last year's supply chain challenges and global production demands decline.

Late last year, the CMA CGM Group signed an agreement to acquire Bayonne and New York terminals currently held by Global Container Terminals Inc (GCT).
