ABS AIP for Project Sabre to further ammonia-fueled shipping

Author:   Posttime:2023-08-09

THE American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has granted Seaspan Corporation and the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Centre for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS) in collaboration with Foreship an Approval in Principle (AiP) for the design of an innovative 15,000 TEU ammonia-powered container vessel, reports Bangalore's Marine Insight.

The AiP certificates were presented at the ABS office in Copenhagen on July 25. Ammonia is a promising alternative marine fuel, yet no ships currently use it. In 2022, Seaspan and MMMCZCS jointly embarked on a project aimed at comprehending the challenges and potential of designing a large ammonia-fueled container vessel.

Together with ship designer Foreship and classification society ABS, they developed a concept design for the 15,000-TEU containership.

The project involved defining safety objectives, assessing the impact of ammonia as a fuel on vessel performance, conducting a hazard identification (HAZID) qualitative risk assessment, and creating the concept design.

The documentation covers fuel range and endurance analysis, assessments of ammonia tank and system locations, general arrangement, main machinery, and electrical system design, as well as initial vessel stability calculations.

This ambitious project is closely associated with the Singapore Ammonia Bunkering Feasibility Study (SABRE) consortium, which is focused on developing and demonstrating an ammonia supply chain in Singapore.

By pushing the boundaries of ammonia-powered vessels, this collaboration is poised to make significant strides in sustainable shipping solutions.
