MSC ships turn spurn Red Sea as war risks mount
MEDITERRANEAN Shipping Company (MSC), the largest container line globally, has followed suit with its competitors by rerouting vessels to steer clear of the Red Sea, aiming to mitigate the risk of attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen on commercial cargo carriers, reports Bloomberg.
In a statement on its website, the company confirmed the attack on the Liberian-flagged 2,500-TEU MSC geared Palatium III in the Red Sea.
No injuries were reported, but the attack resulted in fire damage, leading to the vessel being decommissioned.
"Due to this, and to protect the lives and safety of our seafarers, until the Red Sea passage is safe, MSC ships will not transit the Suez Canal," said the company.
"Some services will be rerouted to go via the Cape of Good Hope instead."
The Royal Navy, as disclosed by Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said HMS Diamond, and air defence missile destroyer, shot down a drone threatening Red Sea merchantmen.
