THE Northwest Sea Alliance (NWSA) concluded 2023 on a positive note, as both total international imports and exports experienced their fourth consecutive month of volume growth in December, reports London's Port Technology.

Notably exports in December reached their highest level since March 2021.



Year-to-date (YTD) import volumes aligned with the overall market trends, while exports continued their recovery from 2022, finishing the year in positive territory.



Container shipments in December 2023 totalled 263,171 TEU, marking a 13.5 per cent increase compared to December 2022.



NWSA reported a 3.4 per cent growth in complete imports for the month, with complete exports showing an impressive 44.6 per cent increase compared to 2022.



Regarding annual volumes, the port authority disclosed a 12.1 per cent decline in 2023 compared to 2022, amounting to 2.97 million TEU.



Total imports experienced a 13.7 per cent decrease, while entire exports saw a 4.9 per cent growth.



The domestic container volume registered a 0.4 per cent increase in 2023 compared to 2022.



Alaska volumes exhibited a 3.4 per cent increase, while Hawaii volumes declined 12.3 per cent.



Adding to the developments, two all-electric super-panamax cranes and three hybrid cranes arrived at Terminal 5 in the Seattle Harbour in December.



Notably in November 2023, NWSA reported container volumes of 230,787 TEU, representing a 6.6 per cent decrease from November 2022.
