Container shipping delays keep freight rates elevated

Author:   Posttime:2021-06-15

Container shipping companies have been forced to mitigate supply chain disruptions from delays in China as Covid emerges in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, reports London's S&P Global Platts.

"We expect continued terminal congestion and vessel delays upwards of 15 days in the coming week," said Maersk.
Due to these disruptions, many vessels will be ignoring the ports of Yantian and Shekou in order to protect schedule reliability.
Hapag-Lloyd also declared a customer report on its port of Yantian omissions on transpacific eastbound services to reduce vessel idle time and port congestion.
Said a logistics provider: "The Yantian port can only handle 500 boxes a day now compared with 30,000 before. The vessels can't call Shekou or Nansha because these ports don't carry the capacity to handle such large volumes,"
"The Yantian issue will definitely snowball. Even if they say the resolution will be found by July, it will have lingering effects," said the provider.
