HONG Kong's emergency services put out a cargo ship fire in the harbor nearly fifteen hours after it burst into flames and sent toxic smoke across the city.
The blaze broke out on board the Panamanian-flagged general cargo ship Affluent Ocean carrying 2,000 tonnes of metallic waste at 5.26 pm on Wednesday and was extinguished at 8.20am yesterday.
The fire prompted warnings to residents of West Kowloon and the Fire Services Department urged residents in the area to close their windows because of the acrid smoke coming from the blaze. Some residents in Mei Foo and Cheung Sha Wan complained of not feeling well, according to RTHK news.
The 120-metre -long vessel was moored off Stonecutters Island, in waters south of Tsing Yi.
Firefighters with breathing apparatus and two fire boats were dispatched to fight the blaze. No casualties were reported.
