CONTAINER volume at the Port of Santos grew 2.9 per cent to 3.3 million TEU in the period January-August compared to the first eight months of 2021.
Volumes reached 456,500 TEU in August, up 12 per cent year on year. The flow of containers and agribusiness goods boosted the port's global figures, leading it to a new record for the year, with 110.1 million tonnes, up 9 per cent over the same period of the previous year.
The growth observed in August took the port sector by surprise, totalling 14.6 million tonnes, an increase of 21.4 per cent over August 2021, making it the best performance for the month, reports UK's Seatrade Maritime News.
Year to date, shipments totalled 80.3 million tonnes, an increase of 11.1 per cent compared to the same period in 2021.
Year to date, the products that stood out the most in exports were pulp, with an expressive movement of 5.4 million tonnes, an increase of 61.2 per cent; corn, with 6.4 million tonnes (+78.0 per cent); soybeans, with 23.8 million tonnes (+9.9 per cent); soybean meal in bulk, with 6.2 million tonnes (+32.0 per cent); and animal meat, with 1.5 million tonnes (+31.8 per cent). In turn, fertilizers stood out in imports, with 5.5 million tonnes (+13.1 per cent).
In the first eight months of the year, 3,454 vessels passed through the port, 6.2 per cent higher than that recorded in the same period last year.
