ABB, Wallenius Marine partner up to monitor CII performance of 6 Terntank tankers in new trial

Swedish-Swiss equipment provider ABB and Swedish ship design and management company, Wallenius Marine, have joined forces with Danish tanker operator, Terntank, to monitor the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) performance aboard six tankers owned by Terntank. As reported, the trial aims to ‘lower emissions and reduce the environmental footprint’ of the shipping industry.

ABB revealed that the trial revolves around the company’s OVERSEA fleet support center system, a collaborative project between ABB and Wallenius Marine.

With sustainability in mind, the trial will be performed across a fleet of six 15,000 dwt product/chemical tankers. It will cover the performance of the engine, hull and propeller, auxiliary systems, forecasting as well as the monitoring of the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII). In addition, it is understood that the trial will include shore-based support expertise, which would be provided ‘as needed’.

“We look forward to our vessel crews and office-based staff collaborating with the OVERSEA Fleet Support Center experts on a common platform to turn insights into actions and further enhance vessel performance,” said Claes Möller, CEO of Terntank Ship Management AB.

Described as a ‘digital decision-support service’, OVERSEA relies on ABB’s Ability Genix Industrial Analytics and AI IoT platform.

As per ABB’s report, Genix combines industrial analytics and artificial intelligence, based on which it can ‘unlock contextualized data’ and potentially improve ‘industrial productivity and operational performance.’

Given the fact they represent one-third of the global fleet with around 10,000 vessels worldwide, tankers are projected to be ‘strong prospects’ for OVERSEA. Sharing his thoughts on the trial with Terntank, Niklas Sundén, Commercial Manager, OVERSEA, highlighted:

“Conventional solutions that offer performance insights often leave it to customers to contextualize the data and come up with actions to improve performance. OVERSEA will be utilized by both the customers’ onboard crews and shore-side personnel, together with OVERSEA’s Center experts who manage the process and workflows. For us, collaboration and full transparency are crucial in order to take the performance insights into actions.”

To remind, earlier this year, ABB was picked by German cruise operator, Phoenix Reisen to install its Onboard DC Grid power system and shore connection to Phoenix Reisen’s 205-meter 835-passenger capacity ship.

Meanwhile, in June 2024, Norwegian technology company Kongsberg, secured a deal to build the tenth hybrid chemical tanker for Terntank.
